Surviving and thriving

Celebrating stories of women who have overcome trauma and tragedy by keeping their eyes fixed on the things they could control.

Our mission at 10X Investments includes empowering people to take charge of their own long-term life plans. We try to educate people about what happens to their savings and about the options they have with their own money. We tell them: No one cares about your money more than you! Conversations about taking back your financial power often feed into the wider debate about controlling the things you can in life.

In December, 10X is a sponsor of an event that celebrates the lives of a number of women who are living proof of the power of controlling the things you can. These women are shining beacons of courage and we expect this event showcasing their stories to inspire many others.

Emma Heap, Head of Retail at 10X, says: “10X welcomes the opportunity to be part of this event that will showcase the inspiring stories of courageous women. We expect the I Am Woman event to inspire people, both women and men, to make positive changes in their own lives.”

The event, scheduled to be held at Workshop 17 at the V&A Waterfront on December 2, is being organised by Lindsay Dibowitz, a Cape Town entrepreneur, mother and survivor of trauma. Lindsay suffered a massive heart attack when the youngest of her three children was just six days old.

The then 34 year old went into full cardiac arrest for 97 minutes and was resuscitated nine times. Lindsay survived the attack, but was left without any confidence, almost frozen by fear, in fact.

The attack was the result of a rare disorder called spontaneous cardiac artery dissection (SCAD), also known as sudden death syndrome. According to the Mayo Clinic, which specialises in SCAD, it’s very rare to meet a survivor.

After a few years of treatment, torment and terror, an apparently minor event helped her get on to the path to “finding her brave”. Lindsay began to thrive by focusing on the things she could control. She went from being an overweight, unhealthy and terrified heart attack survivor to a happy, healthy mother of three who takes part in Ironman fitness events.

She has organised December’s I Am Woman event to celebrate the lives of other women who have survived and thrived, and to inspire even more to “find their brave”.

Victoria Milligan, a British woman who survived a horrific accident where she lost her husband, a child and part of one leg, will be the keynote speaker at the event.

By concentrating on the things she could control Victoria has survived enormous trauma, and is now thriving. Not only is she a healthy and happy Mum to her other three children, who survived the accident with her, she is also an endurance athlete.

A third story will be told by the showing of a short documentary film at the I am Woman event. Limits is a film about a severely mentally challenged 30-year-old woman, Donna, who overcame great challenges to run the New York Marathon.

Donna’s story was made into a movie by Lauren Gillis, founder of Relate, a not-for-profit enterprise that has sold more than 2.6 million bracelets and raised in excess of R45 million in support of more than 90 charitable causes worldwide.

Relate is just one of the many philanthropic organisations Lauren has built; Donna is just one of the people with physical and mental challenges she has supported.

10X Investments is proud to stand alongside these courageous women, and to partner with them for this event to share their stories of surviving and thriving by focusing on the things they could control.

10X’s Emma Heap will give a short talk at the event about controlling the things you can to ensure a happy and dignified retirement. Emma, who is personally very active in the community helping disadvantaged girls, will be on hand to answer questions afterwards.

Tickets for the event cost R275 and are available at http://qkt.io/pUygRK
