What a time to be in the market

Massively heightened geopolitical risks, an energy crisis, inflation and now recession threatening, what a time to be in the market! But, as Morningstar SA’s Debra Slabber told Michael Avery on the latest episode of Not The Daily News on Classic Business, sitting on the side-lines because you fear there is a recession coming is usually the worst thing you can do.

Slabber, who is Portfolio Specialist Director at Morningstar SA, urged investors to recognise that the market is forward-looking and economic data is backward-looking so “there is a very good chance that a recession is already priced into valuations”.

While she and Avery agreed that market volatility was likely to continue, they also said that (as history teaches us) it is often in time of crisis that the best investment opportunities are created.
