Although men were welcome to attend, the evening was primarily intended for women across the South African financial services industry to connect with one another, share their professional experiences and build relationships.
One of the key objectives of the Women in South African Financial Services Network is to facilitate mentorship for women looking to develop their leadership skills. This will be done by presenting opportunities through the network and providing a platform for would-be leaders to connect with industry peers. In the past, the financial services industry has been dominated by men, but there has been a shift over the years thanks to efforts to create a more diverse sector.
According to a recent study by Deloitte, an increased focus on diversity, equity and inclusion the financial sector globally has recorded limited success with the proportion of women in leadership roles within financial services firms rising only modestly, from 22% in 2020 to 24% in 2021. However, Deloitte projects that to grow to 28% by 2030.
The modest growth in numbers of women in leadership roles is a motivating factor for initiatives such as the Women in SA Financial Services Network. This network provides a platform to empower and connect women in the industry so that they can gain and build positive support structures for their careers.
Caroline Naylor-Renn, Chief Operating Officer at 10X Investments, says: “We are very excited to be part of this initiative that fosters connection and skills sharing among women in the industry. It is important that we create a platform for professional networking where we can skip the formalities and connect, as well as learn from each other.”
She added: “We would like to see this network grow and play a vital role in supporting the dynamic individuals who are part of it.”
In an evening filled with conversations about career growth and development, one of the key themes that emerged was that the industry needs spaces that are inclusive to foster support and growth from within the financial sector.
Georgina Smith, head of training and development at the investment platform INN8, said: “This is a fabulous event. What I like is the diversity of women from various companies within the financial industry who are mingling and chatting. I really like events which are just about networking, no presentations or inspirational speakers and formalities.”
The Women in South African Financial Services network was launched on 8th March this year, on the occasion of International Women’s Day, with the support of 10X Investments, Bravura, Stanlib, INN8, and Altus.
