How much can I withdraw from my living annuity per year?

Question:

The tax man needs R23 000 from me. I have my money with Investec in a living annuity and want to take money from this fund to pay my debt. The investment is R80 000 stronger than the initial investment. But it appears that this is not allowed.

Answer:

Vic, You can draw down /withdraw between 2.5% and 17.5% pa from your living annuity. You make this election once per year, before your policy anniversary date. This is then paid out to you monthly, or quarterly or annually. If you need more money, you have to increase your draw-down rate, within the prescribed limits, when the anniversary date approaches. But you cannot make an additional ad hoc withdrawal of R23 000 during the year.
