What is the typical draw-down rate for an annuity?

Question:

What is the typical draw-down rate for an annuity.

Answer:

Gary,

If you are referring to a living annuity, then the choice is yours, within the statutory limits of 2,5% and 17,5% of your residual capital at the policy anniversary date. A sustainable initial draw-down (growing with inflation) is between 4% and 6% of your opening capital. If you are referring to a guaranteed annuity, then the effective yield on your capital will depend on the type of annuity you take out, your age and your gender. You have to shop around to find the best rate (among the life insurers) for what you need.
