Can I access my paid-up retirement annuity?

Question:

I have a retirement annuity that I stopped paying about 10 years ago. It is currently worth R25k. I am desperate to withdraw the funds from my retirement annuity to avoid losing my house. Is there anything I can do to access these funds?

Answer:

Hi Carla,

Other than turning 55, the answer is unfortunately "no", you cannot withdraw your retirement annuity fund. The other options, which are formal emigration and retiring early due to ill-health, do not seem appropriate solutions for you.
