Can I make tax deductions on a paid-up retirement annuity?

Question:

Can a person still make tax deductions on a paid-up retirement annuity fund policy?

Answer:

Reuben,

Tax deductions are only available on contributions to a retirement annuity fund (limited to 15% of non-pensionable income). If you have made your retirement annuity paid up, you are no longer contributing, so you cannot claim any deductions. The minimum allowed deduction (R1 750) assumes that you are in fact making a contribution of that size.
