Do family members have claim to a deceased's pension?

Question:

Hi I would like to assist my mom and my uncle and I am not sure where to start. I have contacted the GEPF on 0800117669 and they could not help. My grandfather, Henry William Clark Chamberlin, was in the police force for 24 years then calle the SAMR (South African Mounted Rifles). He joined 5/5/1902 and was discharged 21/10/1926. My grandmother passed on about 40 years ago and never ever claimed from this service. My grandfather's D.O.B is 22/10/1902. He also served in the Army. Is there a possibility that you can assist me, please? Kind regards Shenaaz Farred

Answer:

Shenaaz,

You grandfather may have been entitled to a pension, and your grandmother to a widower's pension. However, that pension would have ceased on her death, and would not pass onto her children. So your mother and uncle have no claim to a pension arising from your grandfather's service.
