Do I only submit an IRP5 when withdrawing my provident fund?

Question:

I have resigned from my current employer and am awaiting provident fund pay-out. I do not have a retirement annuity; do I need to only submit my IRP5 or do I have to submit the provident fund papers as well?

Answer:

Grant,

Is this question in connection with your tax return? If you are withdrawing from the provident and taking cash then this will be taxed by way of a tax directive from SARS, and you will receive the net amount. The provident fund pay-out should then not appear on your income tax return again. If it does, you can submit the related IRP5, to prove the amount was already taxed.
