Do retirement annuities come with ill-health benefits?

Question:

Good day Sir / Madam I suffer from diabetes, I struggle to work. I have a retirement annuity with Momentum, that has a ill health benefit. I need to support my family financially. Is it possible to claim against that policy in any way. Thanking you kindly

Answer:

Randall,

Retirement annuities do not come with ill-health benefits; however you can retire early from your retirement annuity if you have to take early retirement due to ill-health. However, to do so you must provide medical evidence, and you may be asked to get a second opinion (at your expense). It seems unlikely however that a doctor would see your diabetes as preventing you from working, so it would really have to be quite debilitating.
