How can I access an unclaimed death benefit?

Question:

Hi. I was wondering if you could help me, as I have been battling to get information on the internet. I'm trying to find out if my father has any unpaid benefits still owed to him. He worked in the military and air force in the 60's, which is what is making it so difficult to get info. He has since passed away. Any help would be much appreciated! Thank you.

Answer:

Simone,

In terms of the Military Veterans Act, a military veteran is defined as a SA citizen who rendered military service to any of the military organisations involved on all sides of the South African liberation war between 1960 and 1994. The benefit includes medical care, education and pension money for those who qualify. If your mother is still alive, she may qualify for a small spousal benefit, but this would not extend to any children. From our reading, the deadline to register for these unpaid benefits has already passed. You may find out more from the South African Military Veterans Association (SAMVA).
