How do tax benefit rebates work for retirement annuities?

Question:

Hi, my retirement annuity are being deducted from my salary.According to SARS I don't qualify for a rebate due to the fact that it's being deducted from my salary. Can you perhaps explain why that is.

Answer:

Theo, If your retirement annuity contributions are deducted from your salary, this means that you are paying less PAYE than you would otherwise do. In effect, you get the tax benefit immediately. Those who pay retirement annuity contributions out of their own pocket must wait until they do their tax return the next year before they get the tax benefit (ie the tax refund).
