Is my pension fund still mine after my divorce?

Question:

I used to be married, but we divorced after a year. While I was still waiting for a date, my ex also processed her own divorce. I later learnt that we were divorced without any notification from my side. Luckily we had no children. I want to resign from my work, and would like to know if my pension is still in tact.

Answer:

Shadrack,

There is no such thing as a unilateral divorce unless you absconded, or you deliberately ignored the divorce summons. You should ask for the divorce order, to see how the assets were split, and whether your pension fund is all yours.
