What is the tax treatment of an employer's contribution to an RA?

Question:

Good Day I work for a Church and recently joined a retirement annuity to which my employer contributes. Our payroll system has suddenly started popping up an error with the tax. Could you please explain how the employer's contribution to an RA should be treated within a payroll system and this should affect my tax? Thank you

Answer:

Sascha,

The employer's contribution to an RA should be treated as a fringe benefit, and taxed as such in your hands. The retirement annuity contribution should then be deducted off your taxable income (effectively reducing your PAYE and neutralising the fringe benefits tax).
