Will I be penalised if I make my Metropolitan RA paid-up?

Question:

Good day, I have a retirement policy with metropolitan which I would like to surrender. My question is, will I get the money paid up to date right now? If so, what penalties are might I incur? Thanking you in advance.

Answer:

Julia, If you make your Metropolitan RA paid-up, you will most likely incur a penalty - check with the administrator to find out how much. You can only reclaim your money if the paid-up value of your retirement annuity is less than R7 000; otherwise you have to wait until your turn 55.
