Can I borrow from my provident fund if I have a low credit score?

Question:

I want to know if I can borrow money from my provident fund if my credit score is very low.

Answer:

Solomzi,

Your credit score does not matter when it comes to borrowing from your provident fund, as the money you borrow comes out of your own savings. So you are borrowing from yourself. The problem is that you are borrowing from your "retired" self (the person you will be when you stop working), and if you don't pay back the money, you may not have enough money in retirement. If that happens, the future you may not look back kindly on the present you. Be aware though that you may only borrow from your provident fund if it housing-related (eg to buy a house or to pay down your mortgage) and if this is permitted by the specific rules of your fund.
