Can I claim my disability and provident funds after years have passed?

Question:

I worked for KFC for 3 years on a permanent basis. I left in 2008 because of a permanent disability. I left without claiming disability funds and provident funds. Do I still qualify to claim and how do I start the process? Regards

Answer:

Keitumetse,

You can still claim your provident fund. Your money will most likely be in an unclaimed benefits fund. You need to contact the KFC HR department, and they will advise you who administers unclaimed benefits on behalf of KFC in SA. You then need to contact the administrator of that fund, and provide the necessary supporting documents that they require.

It is unlikely that you will be able to claim disability, as you need to lodge such a claim within a certain period. However this depends on the terms and conditions of the insurer, so you need to ask your former employer where you stand on this (they will have a copy of the terms and conditions).
