Can I make a loan against my Sanlam Umbrella Fund for a home deposit?

Question:

Hi, Please tell me, does the Sanlam Umbrella Fund allow for a loan for a deposit on a house and what is the procedure, as no one at Sanlam knows anything. Thanks

Answer:

K,

Such loans are permitted in terms of s19(5) of the Pension Funds Act, if they meet certain criteria. However, they also have to be permitted by the Sanlam Umbrella Fund's specific or general fund rules, and most funds do not allow it. You should contact your HR department as they would know whether such loans are permitted at your company, and what hoops you have to jump through, to receive one.
