Can I transfer my provident fund to a living annuity?

Question:

can i purchase a living annuity with my withdrawal benefits from my provident fund. i'm 63 years.

Answer:

Mike, A living annuity can only receive proceeds form a retirement fund, or another living annuity. So you can transfer directly from your provident fund to the living annuity, but you cannot withdraw from the provident fund (ie receive a taxed cash lump sum) and then transfer the net amount into a living annuity. That would, in any event, not be very tax efficient. If you have already withdrawn, you do have the option to transfer the proceeds into a retirement annuity fund, and from there transfer across into a living annuity. As you are then using after-tax money, the income from the living annuity would not be taxed until you have exhausted the initial capital invested.
