Can I withdraw from my retirement fund while employed?

Question:

Good afternoon. Am I able to withdraw from my retirement fund if my employer has been acquired by another company? The fund is being dissolved and monies will be transferred to the new company's provident fund - I would prefer to withdraw. I am 48 years old and have been with the company for 3 years.

Answer:

Linda,

You are only allowed to withdraw from your retirement fund if you  resign, or you are dismissed or retrenched. In your instance, you merely have a new shareholder, and a S14 transfer to another fund. This means you will not be able to withdraw. Ultimately, this is good news for you, because your retirement savings are intended for your retirement.
