Can I withdraw my provident fund if I'm claiming UIF?

Question:

In 2011 I worked for a company for only a month. I got another job and worked there for 1 year and 3months, then resigned. I was just about to claim UIF when I got a job where I worked for for 10 months, then got dismissed. After that I got a job contract for 6 months. I would like to know can I withdraw my provident fund if I'm claiming UIF?

Answer:

Dubasi,

Yes, you can claim UIF even if you claim your provident fund. UIF protects you against unemployment for a few months, your provident fund is supposed to provide you with income when you retire (age 65 or so). Of course, if you spend your provident fund money now, that is not going to be the case.
