Can voluntary contributions be claimed back tax-free at retirement?

Question:

Additonal voluntary monthly and/or lump sum payments made to my retirement fund (@ work retirement fund), can this be claimed back tax free when on retirement?. I assume that the interest gained on these payments will be part of my total pension and taxed accordingly?

Answer:

Oscar, Apologies for the late reply. If you did not claim your voluntary contributions for tax, then these will returned to you tax free on resignation or retirement (either as part of your cash lump sum or as tax-free annuity income). You are correct, the investment return thereon is treated/taxed in the same way as the investment return on compulsory contributions.
