Does my pension get taxed differently when I'm dismissed/resign?

Question:

Tax paid on pension fund (dismissed and resigned) Could you please help me and explain to me why one should tick on the form if you were dismissed or resigned. Apparently the tax that one pays on either option is not the same. Thank you KW

Answer:

KW,

Yes, from a lump sum tax perspective it makes no difference whether you are dismissed or you resigned. However, dismissal may allow you to claim for UIF, whereas resignation does not. And if you are (voluntarily) retrenched, you can not only claim UIF, but your retrenchment package may also be taxed as retirement lump sum (rather than as income).
