How do I trace old retirement policies?

Question:

I think I may have old policies that may have matured or have simply gone dormant. I heard about an online service whereby I can check if I still have policies, but despite searching I cannot find anything. Do you perhaps know the details of such an online service?

Answer:

Jonathan, There is a system called Astute, which is an electronic information exchange portal for the Financial Services Industry. Among other things, it enables simultaneous access to a client's policy and investment information at several life offices and other financial institutions. It is designed to help intermediaries assist with their client's financial planning but it can also be used to trace old policies at different life companies. You would have to get hold of a broker who has access to the system, and who could do a search for you.
