How will my pension fund be taxed upon withdrawal?

Question:

Hi. I transferred my Provident Fund (400,000.00) into my new company Pension Fund in 2008. I am now withdrawing my full company pension fund. Will i be taxed on the full benefit and what happens to the portion of my provident fund that was previously taxed.

Answer:

Sunita, You would not have paid tax on your provident fund when you transferred to the pension fund. The only tax you may have occurred relates to your (as opposed to your employer's) contributions to the provident fund. These contributions should be returned to you free of tax (ie will be added to your R25 000 tax free lump sum).
