How much tax will I pay upon my first pension fund withdrawal?

Question:

I am resigning from my current job and would like to partially withdraw from my pension fund. How much will they tax me? This is my 1st partial withdrawal.

Answer:

Sisanda, You will be taxed per the withdrawal lump sum tax table. This means you receive the first R22 500 tax free. The balance to R600 000 would be taxed at 18%. Any amounts that you transfer to a preservation fund or to another retirement fund would not be taxed until you do withdraw it.
