Why can't I withdraw my fund if I did an inter-company transfer?

Question:

I would like to ask about provident fund. I'm working for a mining company. I was with another business unit within the mine industry and now i have been appointed by another business unit. Both business units they are not using the same provident fund service provider. Now i'm trying to claim my fund from the previous one, they are saying to me i can't because i'm still within the mining industry.

Answer:

Nana, The general rule is that if you leave your employer, you can withdraw from the fund unless you are part of an industry fund. If this is not an industry fund - and it does not sound like it, given that the two employers' funds have different service providers - then you should be allowed to withdraw. However, it is possible that one company has different funds for different divisions/business units; in that case (if this is just an inter-company transfer), you would also not be allowed to withdraw.
